Outdoor Learning

At Ayios Nikolaos Primary School we are proud to offer three unique outdoor educational experiences: Forest School, Beach School and Garden School. Our qualified Level 2 and 3 Forest School trained teaching staff offer experiences that give the children the opportunity to succeed and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in an outdoor environment. Our Outdoor Learning Schools encourage children to develop their independence, set their own challenges and demonstrate their ability to make choices and drive their own learning, pursing knowledge and skills that interests them.

Through challenging activities they develop practical skills, build confidence in decision making and evaluating and managing risk.  They use tools to create and build and work through practical problems and challenges. These activities develop resilience as the children learn how to manage failures, experience achievement and success, discover how they learn best and reflect on their learning and experiences.

Throughout their experiences, the children build an understanding of the benefits of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Being in the outdoor environment helps them explore connections between humans, wildlife and the earth.

Whilst outdoors the children transfer their learning of our core school values of respect, appreciation, co-operation, responsibility, caring, courage friendship, trust and develop their personal and social skills.

Outdoor learning also supports other key skills and knowledge within other subjects such as science, geography, mathematics, design technology, art and the key skills of speaking and listening.
